Overall, it was a wonderful movie! I'm glad I watched it.
Before I talk about the main point, I'm happy with the whole mood of the movie. Even though it was bloody (which I really cringed at, because apparently I hate blood and stabbing XD) It was fun to watch. Mumon wasn't just the greatest ninja of Iga. He was a comedian which gave a really fun and light tone to the movie despite the drama and violent side of it. You can see how fun and light-hearted the background music was when Mumon fought Daizen's men and how it was relatively easy for him to wipe them.
Ohno portrayed it perfectly. Well, in real life, he's a little like that, if you watch Arashi's variety shows. He's quiet most of the time which implies that he's a serious person. But when he speaks, which rarely happens, the room suddenly bursts of laughter. I'm glad they cast Ohno for this role.
Because the whole film's mood was focused on the war, I was actually looking forward to Nobukatsu's head getting cut off. I was a little disappointed it didn't happen. I don't know, even if he has his own struggles as Nobunaga's shadow who has to live up to his father's expectations and reputation, even though most people would probably feel sorry for him, he never did anything to get out of that shadow. Probably why I hate him.
Heibee was irritating at first because he looked like the antagonist of the whole situation but he actually played a bigger role in opening Mumon's eyes. Too bad, it was only Mumon who realized it. Iga fell along with the faulty mindset. Iga was doomed with that greedy motivation. On the bright side, in the middle of the story, Mumon got to unite the land- but it wasn't because of 'love for nation', it was greed. Could be useful too, sometimes, but not altogether.
At first, I thought it was simply a movie about war. About two parties at war. Contrary to what it looks like, it has a deep story, one that transcends time, one that stands and will forever be in humanity, one that doesn't live exclusively in a certain Japanese era. Daizen was right. They're scattered in this world. Sad thing is, Mumon's wife has to die (oops, spoiler!) first before he gets totally sting with the idea.

Sadly, Heibee's skill and motivation weren't enough to defeat Mumon and his beliefs. Mumon had to pay the price at the end to realize what Heibee has been telling him all along, you know, that they're not human.
Great movie, isn't it? :)

Date: 2018-02-19 04:39 am (UTC)Mumon was probably not a very motivated person unless it came to his wife :) However, he was called the best ninja so even Heibee's skill or motivation were no match to his, but did plant a seed in Mumon's mind about whether being human or not human. Mumon even had Heibee buried in Ise since that was the land of "humans" and not Iga where he was born.
Also 99.9 is wonderful. I'm very excited to see the up coming episodes and how the characters continue to grow, especially since it dives into the judges system rather than the prosecution. Miyama's puns are hilarious and Ozaki's backstory will be interesting to see unfold.
